This waterway was to play a crucial role not only in settlement development but also in agriculture, industry and even politics. Prior to reliable roads or railway systems, the Murray was inland Australia's greatest highway, transporting goods and passengers the 2,500 kilometres between the river mouth at the Southern Ocean and Albury New South Wales.	en
