Description: | The study area is within Central Railway Station, the third iteration of a Sydney rail terminus in this location. The First Sydney Station was constructed by the Sydney Railway Company in 1855. The structure was intended to be temporary but instead lasted at least 15 years, it was demolished before April 1872 as the construction for the Second Sydney Station was already 'in rapid progress.' The Second Sydney Station was built in approximately the same location as the first station and opened c.1874. As demands on the rail network were continually increasing, the original two short platforms of this station were lengthened and additional platforms were added until 13 were in use - this activity took place in the 1880s and the additions and extensions were in place by 1884. Construction for the Third Sydney Station began in 1902 and the main concourse level of the current Central Station was completed by 1906. The Second Sydney Station was extant during this construction and was demolished shortly after the Third Sydney Station opened. |
